We all have our favorite aesthetic when it comes to our dream barn. Design and functionality always tops the list when it comes to our stalls. I personally love an open top stall front so my guys can stick their heads out. Given the chance to design your own barn, what elements would you choose? Who would you hire to help you build it out? We caught up with Yash Balasaria from American Stalls  to learn a little bit more about the process and how American Stalls , a company making a name for itself in equestrian design, came to be.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and American Stalls.
My name is Yash Balasaria and I’m the CEO of American Stalls. American Stalls is part of our family’s business ownership group that consists of three other steel manufacturing companies. While our other businesses go into heavy-industry on a B2B front, American Stalls is our sole business that is B2C.

We founded American Stalls in 2006 as an extension of our steel manufacturing businesses. We initially began in the industry by fabricating 1,500 horse stall systems for HITS Horse Shows. Ever since, we have evolved and grown as a business. In the beginning, we focused our product line and strategy towards equestrian facilities and venues. Since 2018, we have shifted our business to custom build almost everything for equestrian facilities of all sizes – whether that is a private barn build, training facility, or larger show venues. We strive to provide our clientele with the highest quality stabling equipment that is then backed up by world class customer service.

Why the shift into designing stalls in 2018 ?

We reflected on our strengths as a team along with our overall long-term vision. We realized that our strengths were in our extreme attention to detail in product design and quality – along with a natural ability to deliver warm, personalized customer service. We combined those 3-4 elements and saw a need for a stall manufacturer that provided those deliverables to our clients.

Since 2018, we have rapidly grown our business to build some of the finest stabling equipment for beautiful barns across the nation. We pride ourselves that 90% of our products are custom designed and custom built for each project.

What is your most requested design element when doing a makeover or new barn?

There really isn’t one most requested design element when clients are doing a renovation or a new barn construction. That is primarily because of our sales and design approach at American Stalls. We emphasize to clients that their barns are their own canvases. We are simply there to help facilitate their dreams into reality by also providing some guard rails (i.e. providing best practices in safety, equine handling, and facility flow). For this reason, many fo our projects feature very custom options.

However, we prioritize a few elements across the board for any project. That includes elegance, safety, and longevity. Elegance is self-explanatory. The product must look and feel good every time you interact with it. Longevity is also self-explanatory – we choose the very best raw materials and incorporate the best manufacturing practices to ensure a long-term viable product.

Lastly, Safety is also somewhat self-explanatory, but we think of safety as more than just physical safety. We associate good health as safety as well. In this case, this means increasing ventilation and natural sunlight into the barn for healthier horses. This is where the “most requested design element” comes into play. Few elements come to mind including:

 ·    Mesh or 1” bars (on 2.5” centers) on stall door bottoms to promote visibility into the stall, ventilation, odor management, and overall stall aesthetics

·    Incorporating glass into barn doors, Dutch doors, and barn windows – allowing natural sunlight into the barn while improving aesthetics

Who designs the stalls?

When a client approaches American Stalls, our sales team will begin the consultation process. This process is very organic in its nature. This is a process where we get to learn about the client, their project, their project’s goals, and details about their needs, their horses, and more. After a handful of conversations, the client will usually receive a quotation from our team based on a variety of designs they have selected.=

These designs can originate from our own social media, catalog, and portfolio of past projects. It can also originate from other outlets, other social media, etc. Our team is able to then provide estimates on other non-American Stalls designs as a client would like. If the client chooses to move forward with our firm, we then begin the design process. Our expert team of draftsmen then provide detailed Technical Shop CAD Drawings for our clients’ review. We then work with the client and their team (i.e. architects, builders, etc) to confirm measurements, installation details, and fit. We then receive sign off on those finalize plans and get into manufacturing.

Do you work with different architects when designing a barn?  Any we might know?

Yes, absolutely. We routinely work with some of the best architects, general contractors, and builders across the US. Some of our equine architect relationships include well-known firms such as GH2 Equine Architects and Historical Concepts (Old Town Plans). We also work with other architects that are less known in the equine community, but that do exceptional work.

What separates American Stalls from other stall design manufacturers?

In an age of more automation, we believe that our customer service is ultimately what sets us apart. We build not only the finest stabling equipment, but back it up with an incredibly high-touch, personalized client experience. This means customer service that is delivered by individuals whom truly care about your barn project’s success – both in the short-term and long-term. That means ensuring we help you make the best decisions that keep your horses safe, happy, and healthy. It means helping you make the best decisions that make your barn experience more seamless, enjoyable and stress-free. We approach our clients with humility and a deep empathy.
